Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most celebrated safari destinations, renowned for its large elephant herds, spectacular wildlife and iconic views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Located in southern Kenya near the Tanzanian border, Amboseli offers some of the most memorable wildlife-viewing and photography experiences in East Africa.

The park covers approximately 392 square kilometres and forms part of the much larger Amboseli ecosystem. Its landscape is remarkably diverse, combining open plains, acacia woodland, seasonal lake beds and permanent wetlands fed by underground water originating around Mount Kilimanjaro.

Elephants of Amboseli

Amboseli is particularly famous for its large herds of African elephants. Visitors can often watch elephants crossing the open plains or feeding around the park’s wetlands, sometimes with the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro forming a spectacular backdrop.

Long-term elephant research in the Amboseli ecosystem has also made the area internationally important for understanding and conserving African elephants.

Mount Kilimanjaro Views

Although Mount Kilimanjaro is located across the border in Tanzania, Amboseli provides some of the most famous views of Africa’s highest mountain. Early mornings and late afternoons often provide excellent opportunities to photograph wildlife against the dramatic Kilimanjaro landscape.

Amboseli Wetlands

Underground water from the Kilimanjaro catchment feeds permanent swamps within Amboseli, creating lush green habitats surrounded by otherwise dry plains. These wetlands attract elephants, buffaloes, hippos and numerous species of waterbirds.

Observation Hill

Observation Hill provides panoramic views across Amboseli’s plains, wetlands and seasonal lake. Visitors can leave their safari vehicles at the designated area and walk to the viewpoint, making it one of the park’s most popular scenic stops.

Wildlife in Amboseli

In addition to elephants, Amboseli supports an impressive variety of wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, gazelles and numerous other antelope species.

The park is also an excellent destination for birdwatching, with a rich variety of resident and migratory birds associated with its wetlands, grasslands and woodland habitats.

Amboseli Safari Experience

Amboseli combines exceptional wildlife viewing with some of Kenya’s most recognizable African scenery. Watching elephants wandering across the plains beneath Mount Kilimanjaro is an experience that has made the park a favourite destination for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, families and first-time safari travellers.

Amboseli can be visited as a standalone safari or combined with Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, creating an excellent safari circuit for travellers departing from Mombasa and Kenya’s coastal resorts.
