Masai Mara National Reserve

Maasai Mara National Reserve is one of Kenya’s most famous wildlife destinations, renowned for its sweeping savannah plains, exceptional concentration of wildlife and the spectacular Great Wildebeest Migration. Situated in southwestern Kenya along the border with Tanzania, the reserve forms part of the greater Mara–Serengeti ecosystem.

Covering approximately 1,510 square kilometres, the Masai Mara features rolling grasslands, acacia-dotted plains, riverine forests and the Mara and Talek rivers. Its open landscapes provide excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year.

The Great Wildebeest Migration

The Great Migration is the Masai Mara’s most celebrated natural spectacle. During the seasonal movement between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara, huge numbers of wildebeest, zebras and other grazing animals move through the ecosystem in search of fresh pasture and water.

The dramatic crossings of the Mara River are particularly famous, as migrating herds negotiate steep riverbanks and crocodile-inhabited waters.

Big Five Safari

The Masai Mara is an outstanding destination for travellers hoping to see Africa’s Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. The reserve is especially famous for its big cats, with excellent opportunities to encounter lions, cheetahs and leopards.

Mara River

The Mara River is one of the reserve’s most important natural attractions. Besides playing a central role during the migration, the river provides permanent water for wildlife and supports hippos, crocodiles and numerous bird species.

Wildlife of the Masai Mara

The wider Mara region is home to Maasai communities, whose traditions and pastoral way of life form an important part of the area’s cultural heritage.
